Heylyn, Peter

Heylyn, Peter
(1600–62)
   Polemicist and Historian.
Heylyn was born in Oxfordshire and was educated at the University of Oxford. In 1624 he was ordained and, with his High Church views, he quickly achieved recognition within the Church. In 1630 he became a chaplain to King Charles I and in 1631 a prebendary of Westminster. A determined opponent of Puritanism, he wrote A History of the Sabbath; he was involved in the case against William prynne and he had a long battle with the Dean of Westminster. During the Commonwealth period, he was forced to retire from public life, but he continued to work for the full restoration of the Church of England.
Among his books were a biography of William laud, a history of Presbyterianism and Ecclesia Restaurata – a history of the Reformation of the Church of England.
